If it wouldn't pass an MOT check, we won't make it.
Are Your Replacement Number Plates Legal?
Yes — provided they are manufactured by a DVLA-registered supplier to the correct legal standard. When you order replacement plates, the new plates must comply with all current DVLA regulations including correct Charles Wright font, legal character sizing and spacing, reflective white front and yellow rear backgrounds, and BS AU 145e compliant materials for plates made after September 2021.
You cannot simply buy number plates without providing proof of identity and proof of entitlement to the registration. This is a legal requirement for all number plate suppliers in the UK, including PlateBoss. It applies whether you are replacing a damaged plate, a stolen plate, or simply ordering a fresh set.
What Counts as a Reason to Replace Your Plates?
You may need replacement plates if your current plates are damaged, cracked, or broken; faded or yellowed to the point where the registration is not clearly readable; stolen; failed an MOT inspection for plate-related reasons; or if you have recently purchased a personalised registration and want plates to match.

What Are Replacement Number Plates?

All registered DVLA number suppliers are required by law to obtain proof of entitlement and ID before handing over number plates. If you use a supplier who doesn’t need to see your documents, you are helping crime. But the real question is, how safe are you registration detail with them if they are already breaking the law?
By law we require two documents before we can craft your personalised number plates.

- Utility bill, Council Tax bill or rates bill from the last 6 months
- Bank or building society statement from the last 6 months
- National Identity Card
The following will confirm your name only:

- Police warrant card
- Armed forces identity card
2. Proof of entitlement to the registration number
- vehicle registration certificate (V5C or V5CNI)
- new keeper supplement (V5C/2 or V5C/2NI)
- certificate of entitlement (V750 or V750NI) to the number
- retention document (V778)
- a renewal reminder for vehicle tax or SORN (V11 or V11NI)
- temporary registration certificate (V379 or V379NI)
- a number plate authorisation certificate (V948) with an official stamp from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) or Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA)
- an electronic number plate authorisation certificate (eV948)
- a letter of authorisation from a fleet operator (including lease or hire company) quoting the document reference number from the registration certificate
- if your fleet is in the new V5C on demand scheme (also called ‘V5C suppression’), a PDF of the vehicle’s details from the view vehicle record service
