How Much Do Number Plates Cost in the UK?
How much do number plates cost? The short answer: road-legal number plates in the UK usually cost from around £20 to £80, depending on the style. At PlateBoss, standard printed plates start at £29.99, 3D gel and 4D plates from £49.99, and premium styles like bevelled and 4D gel from £64.99 to £79.99. On top of that you might pay for a fixing kit, fitting or faster delivery. Much cheaper plates exist online, but there’s usually a reason they’re cheap.

What most people actually buy
You might expect most people to go for the cheapest legal plate. They don’t. Bevelled plates are our most popular style, by some way. The raised, framed edge makes the plate look finished, and the extra cost over a standard plate is small compared with what people spend on their cars.
Standard printed plates are still the go-to for a straight replacement after damage or an MOT fail, and 4D gel is the most popular of the gel styles.

- Fixing kit. Adhesive pads or screws, priced by kit. A pack of 8 extra strong pads is £4.99 on its own.
- Fitting. £30 if you’d like us to fit them while you wait when you collect from our Hounslow workshop. See number plate fitting.
- Faster delivery. Royal Mail Tracked 48 is free. Tracked 24 is £5 extra.
Why some plates are so cheap
You’ll find plates online for a fraction of these prices. From what we see at the counter, the cheapest sellers tend to:
- use inferior, cheaper plate materials that crack or fade sooner;
- not follow the law, so there’s no document check, and the spacing, font or markings are wrong;
- offer no warranty at all;
- be bedroom operators rather than registered suppliers with a workshop.
The result is a plate that can fail an MOT or get you fined up to £1,000, and a second set to buy. Our guide to show plates vs road legal plates explains how to tell them apart.
How to get number plates made
- Choose a registered supplier. Only suppliers on the DVLA’s register can legally make road plates.
- Have your documents ready. Photo ID plus proof you’re entitled to the registration, usually your V5C. Our guide to the documents needed for number plates lists every option.
- Pick a style and size, then order online or walk in. At our workshop most plates are made while you wait.

How much do number plates cost in the UK?
Road-legal plates usually cost from around £20 to £80 depending on style. Ours start at £29.99 for standard printed plates, £49.99 for 3D gel or 4D, and up to £79.99 for 4D 6mm gel.
How much does it cost to get number plates made at a shop?
Our plates are made in-house whether you order online or walk in. If you want them fitted while you wait at our Hounslow workshop, fitting is £30.
Why are some number plates so cheap online?
Very cheap plates often use poorer materials, skip the legal document check, get the spacing or markings wrong and come with no warranty.
Do I need to pay for delivery?
Not with us. Royal Mail Tracked 48 is free, and Tracked 24 is £5 extra.
What is the most popular type of number plate?
At our workshop it’s bevelled plates. For straight replacements, standard printed plates are still the most common.
What do I need to get number plates made?
Photo ID and proof you’re entitled to the registration, usually the V5C. Our documents guide lists the alternatives.
Are more expensive plates more legal?
No. A £29.99 printed plate is just as legal as a £79.99 4D gel plate if both are made to BS AU 145e. You’re paying for the look and finish.
